The Biden administration is compelled to create a new system for identifying migrants due to the situation at the southern border. The possible new migrant ID program is generating debate; check out why.

According to the plan’s original description, temporary federal ID cards will be provided to migrants seeking asylum as part of a larger initiative to modernize paperwork, which hasn’t been refreshed since 2015.

The protected pocket card is anticipated to have a QR code for extra information, a photo, and other biographic identification, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

However, the ID can’t be used to cast a vote, but it could be used as identification. For example, the Transportation Security Administration may recognize the card as identification for air travel. Additionally, it would enable law enforcement to confirm whether a migrant was freed after being charged with being “removable from the U.S.”

It’s crucial to remember that this is currently only a plan, and there are still a few hurdles for them to clear.

Firstly, they need the house of representatives to allocate $10 million for the project. However, since Congress is taking longer than expected to approve these higher sums these days, a vote on this is unlikely to happen for a few months.

In addition, an ICE official informed The National Desk that they must submit a necessary pilot notification to Congress. However, the Department of Homeland Security does intend to launch the program before the end of the year if everything is cleared.

Moreover, republicans are concerned that since 1.75 million individuals have entered the nation illegally this year, it may encourage other people to try to do the same.

The details of the initiative are still being developed, according to an ICE official, and the organization will consider additional expansion depending on the results.

About the migrant ID program initiative

The migrant ID program is not brand-new; such initiatives have long been in place at the municipal level.

It was first introduced in New Haven, Connecticut, in 2007, but they have since gained popularity and are now used in several larger cities, including Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington.

The biggest local ID program is in New York City. The police accept it as a legitimate form of identification, which goes by the name “ID NYC.” Additionally, it can be used to sign up for banking services and enroll for benefits like medical insurance.

It’s crucial to note that not all 1.4 million New Yorkers who had a municipal ID last year were unauthorized immigrants. Instead, the initiatives were developed to help the most disadvantaged, such as the homeless and others who would have trouble obtaining a legitimate identity.

As they cope with some crucial missing details, authorities are having difficulty managing the situation at the border.

According to a leaked Inspector General report, between March and June last year, nearly one-third of unlawful border crossers’ U.S. addresses were not recorded by Customs and Border Protection officials. As a result, over 720,000 people entered the country at that time.

Although it’s not yet apparent if the ID concept includes a specific mechanism to handle this directly, in a perfect world, it will encourage migrants to provide precise location information and digitally check in with law enforcement more frequently.
