“This holiday is always a special opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the USCIS mission and to welcome new citizens as they begin their journey in the United States,” the US Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a statement.

On July 4, USCIS celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in 1776.

This document stated that the 13 American colonies recognized themselves as a new nation—the United States of America—and that they were no longer a part of the British Empire.
