This announcement comes after Venezuelan authorities decided to allow citizens of their country to return, and after high-level talks between the US, Mexico, Colombia, and Panama on October 4 in Mexico City.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas, and Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall talked about the continuous coordinated efforts to address irregular migration in the Western Hemisphere.
This judgment is in line with the administration’s initiatives to expeditiously and fairly process individuals while enforcing the immigration laws in a safe, orderly, and humanitarian manner.
Thousands of Venezuelans have been able to enter the country safely and orderly through the humanitarian parole process and after scheduling an appointment through the CBP One mobile application.
There has been a significant expansion of lawful pathways to enter the country, including for Venezuelans.
The US authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sternly enforcing immigration laws and expeditiously expelling those who choose to enter our country illegally and do not take advantage of these legal procedures.
A regional approach is necessary to address the issue of irregular migration. Other Hemisphere partners are also seeking new measures to address this situation, including increasing repatriations of Venezuelans and other migrants without legitimate claims to protection, using the framework set forth in the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection.
President Biden, together with twenty other leaders, adopted the Los Angeles Declaration last year, which calls for the US to work together to take coordinated action to expand legal pathways, stabilize flows, and manage borders in a humanitarian manner. Repatriations are an essential component of this well-rounded strategy.
The US continues to be appreciative of these countries’ and the hemisphere’s other countries’ efforts to confront historic mass migration. Additionally, the US keeps aiding nations in fortifying their asylum policies.
The United States persists in urging immigrants who wish to enter the country to use the legal routes that we have established and greatly increased, rather than risking their lives to ruthless traffickers and entering our borders illegally just to have them deported.
