social security offices: Social Security offices face temporary closures and service delays

Social Security offices in several states have temporarily limited or suspended in-person service, according to an October 9, 2026 update from the Social Security Administration.

The changes affect residents seeking help from Social Security offices with benefit applications, records, payments, Social Security cards and other services normally handled at a field office.

At some Social Security offices, service was limited to telephone assistance on Friday, October 9, 2026, while others stopped in-person service at a specified time or closed to the public for the day.

SSA also listed several Social Security offices that will remain phone-only until further notice and one New York office scheduled to suspend in-person service from October 13 through November 2, 2026.

Which Social Security offices were affected on October 9

The SSA emergency page identifies offices by city and ZIP code and separates temporary early closures, phone-only service and full closures.

In Alabama, the Dothan and Andalusia offices stopped in-person service at 11 a.m., although telephone assistance remained available until 4 p.m.

Jackson, Fairhope and Mobile, Alabama, provided assistance by telephone only on October 9.

California’s Santa Maria office also had no in-person service on October 9 and directed customers to telephone assistance.

In Florida, the Winter Haven and Tallahassee offices were phone-only for the day.

The Marianna, Panama City, Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola offices in Florida were closed to the public on October 9, with SSA directing customers to its National 800 Number.

In Georgia, the Albany and Thomasville offices stopped in-person service at 2 p.m., while telephone assistance continued until 4 p.m.

Minnesota’s Hibbing and Bloomington offices were phone-only on October 9, and Mississippi’s Gulfport and Moss Point offices also had no in-person service that day.

Wisconsin’s Manitowoc office was listed as phone-only on October 9.

Offices remaining phone-only until further notice

Several Social Security offices have service restrictions that are not limited to October 9.

SSA says the Detroit College Park office in Michigan is providing assistance by telephone until further notice, with no in-person service.

The Fairmont office in Minnesota is also phone-only until further notice.

Pennsylvania’s Bloomsburg office and West Virginia’s Logan office likewise have no in-person service until further notice.

Customers assigned to one of these Social Security offices should verify the latest status before traveling because the emergency page can change as conditions develop.

The city names on the SSA page are paired with ZIP codes so residents can confirm the correct office through the agency’s Field Office Locator.

New York office scheduled for a later service interruption

The Schenectady, New York, Social Security office is scheduled to provide telephone assistance only from Tuesday, October 13, through Monday, November 2, 2026.

SSA says there will be no in-person service at that location during the scheduled period.

This is different from the October 9 closures because the Schenectady restriction is a future, date-specific service change rather than a one-day disruption.

People with appointments or pending business at the Schenectady office should check with SSA before visiting and should use online or telephone options when available.

How to get help when a Social Security office is closed

When Social Security offices are closed, SSA says many services remain available through its website and personal my Social Security accounts.

Online users can apply for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, check an application or appeal status, request certain replacement cards and obtain proof of benefits.

People who receive benefits can also use an account to review information, update certain contact details, manage direct deposit and access tax documents.

Creating an account requires identity verification through Login.gov or ID.me, according to SSA’s online-services guidance.

Residents who cannot complete their business online can call the National 800 Number at 1-800-772-1213.

SSA lists the National 800 Number as a general source of assistance when an office is closed or unable to provide in-person service.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing can call the agency’s TTY number at 1-800-325-0778.

SSA’s standard telephone service information says representatives are generally available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, although callers should confirm current availability for their situation.

What customers should do before traveling

Customers should check the SSA Office Closings and Emergencies page before traveling to a field office listed in this update.

The agency recommends using its Field Office Locator to confirm an office address and obtain local contact information.

Residents should not assume that a nearby office has the same operating status as the Social Security office serving their ZIP code.

They should also distinguish between a phone-only office, an early closure and a full public closure because the available options differ.

A phone-only designation means SSA assistance may still be available remotely, but customers should not expect to enter the office for routine service.

An early closure means in-person service ends at the time shown in the agency notice, even if telephone assistance continues later that day.

A full closure means customers should use the National 800 Number, online services or another official SSA channel instead of appearing at the location.

Closures do not change benefit eligibility or payment rules

The SSA update concerns access to field-office services and does not announce a change to Social Security eligibility, benefit amounts or scheduled payment dates.

It also does not state that benefits are being suspended because of the temporary office restrictions.

SSA separately advises people who do not receive a regularly scheduled payment because of severe weather or another emergency to contact their local office through the Field Office Locator.

Beneficiaries should use official SSA websites and phone numbers rather than responding to unsolicited messages that request personal information or payment.

Because office conditions can change, the agency’s emergency page remains the most reliable source for location-specific service status.

What happens next

The October 9 listings include a mix of completed one-day service restrictions, continuing phone-only operations and a scheduled future closure.

SSA may remove or revise individual listings as offices resume in-person service or as local conditions change.

Customers with time-sensitive benefit matters involving Social Security offices should begin with SSA.gov, review the emergency page and use the Field Office Locator before attempting an in-person visit.
